Is it inevitable?

Somewhere along the way I've heard my little 4cyl/2.7 5 speed is expected to blow a head gasket. The aluminum just can't handle it. Is it true. After an uneventful trip 135 miles up 4000 feet, it gave out. It shuddered, it gave me enough to get it to a shop, and I couldn't bear to ask it for any more. The shop guys did a block test, said it turned a green liquid blue purple, said exhaust was leaking everywhere. It smelled...really bad. What happened to it, can it be saved.

I think you've answered your question.
