Checked out the new 4Runner!
I have yet to see a new 4Runner on the road...so I went to DVNT and checked out the SR5 V8 they had in the showroom...
The pictures on the net make it look like it's posh...but in the flesh...you can tell Toyota has made another serious truck. The overall styling is very imtimidating. From the back, it looks like a baby H2.
Missing inside however, is the little 4WD transfer case lever...replaced by a climate control type rotary switch...but don't worry, there is still the required low-range gear (only available for V8's) and another button to lock the center differential.
There are some "high-class" items such as a lexus-like instrument panel, steering wheel and Mercedes pattern shift gate. But otherwise, everything is no fuss rugged...like any truck should be.
V8's come standard with 5-speed automatic.
V6's come standard only with a 4-speed automatic.
There is a new V6 on the block...the old 5VZ-FE 3.4L is gone and replaced by the huge (for a japanese V6) 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 with VVT-i...which believe it or not...puts out MORE horsepower than the V8 at 245hp! Maxmimum torque is 283lb-ft @ a low 3400rpms
The V8 is the well known 2UZ-FE 4.7L i-Force V8 found in the LX470 and Tundra. It puts out 235hp...10 less than the V6...however, gives 320lb-ft of torque @ 3400rpms
Other cool features is the X-REAS sport suspension package that is standard on Limited models, and optional on all SR5's
X-REAS cleverly cross links the shock absorbers so that they can share their damping oil. This in turn acts somewhat like a hydralic stabilizer system...making the ride extra smooth and very stable.
Also, unique for the Limited V8 models, a 4-link height adjustable air ride rear suspension.
All new 4-runners now have DAC (Downhill Assist Control), HAC (Hill-Start assist control) and 4-wheel disk brakes. V8's come with full time 4WD while the V6's only come with the standard part time 4WD. This goes to show that the 4Runner is a serious off-road contender...not a enlarged stationwagon with a lift kit a.k.a CRV and Highlander amoung others...
I can't wait till I get to take one for a spin! I expect both the V6 and the V8 to be able to haul some serious ass...careful...soon new 4Runner owners will have completed their break in procedures and can let it rip...
