Problem with 4runner please help

I have an 03 4 runner. THe vsc lights and check engine lights came on so i took my 4runner to the dealer. This is about 1 month after having them do a check on it and changing the timing belt. Ok so the dealer told me this long list of things that were wrong with the 4runner. listing up to about $3000. The wanted to charge something like $150 to change the air filter. I went and purchased an air filter and changed it. The check engine light went off. K so i still have these vsc or vcs whatever they are. The dealer told me i needed a new cadiladic converter. obviously i dont know much about cars. I didn't see what that would have to do with that. anyway my AWD is not working. it can switch to 4lo but in 4hi or whatever the back wheels only spin. I dont really know anyone i can trust and i dont trust the dealer not one bit. can someone please help??!?!? Thank you

Fisher,

You need to go to your local parts store and ask if they can do a scan on your rig to check for engine codes. That would be the first step in trying to help you. With out the codes there is not much we can do to try to troubleshoot your problem. Write all codes down and let us know what they are. On the 03 if you get a check engine light it will disable the vsc and the trac system thus giving you those lights. You can try and disconnect the negative cable to the battery and wait about 5 minutes and reconnect it and see if the lights will go away. IF you do this you will have to roll the back window down and back up again to reset the rear window wiper. The rear wiper will not work until you do this.
Those lights will come back on if a problem exists. It might take up to 3 drive cycles for the lights to come back if the problem is still there.
Oh by the way WELCOME to T/N.

ok thank you very much. I will try and do that with the battery. I'm not really concerned about the lights but i live in park city, utah and its a big problem if my AWD isn't working.

Fisher,

The only problem with the lights is that, if they are on the systems are not working.

K so today I took my car to pep boys. I stood and watched for about an hour as this guy tried to work this computer thing. He didn't know where to plug it in went to get his boss, jumped out of my car and left it in gear. Anyway, he returned with a bigger computer that he obviously didn't know how to work. So after about an hour the only code he said he could find was "c1336 zero point calib yaw rate sensor undone" Which he said means there is a problem with the ABS and it is going to cost me $90 for him to tell me exactly what the problem is. Its weird a keep getting different responses for these damn lights. The dealer originally said nothing about the ABS so i have no clue. Tomorrow I will probably take it to a different place and see what they tell me.

Fisher, have you resolved your issue? I have an 03 as well, but RWD only. The same lights are on. I pulled a DTC PO430 with my scanner. The stealer also wants to replace the cats back in 2007. 4runner.org forum points to the yaw rate zero point calibration and that forum have to instruction to reset the yaw rate. Please post back on your solution.

FisherCole,

I think that you need to get another opinion. Maybe someone that might know a little more about their tester?

hey guys. don't listen to that cat converter crap they give you. YOU DON"T NEED A NEW ONE! you probably need to replace your oxygen sensors though. (oxygen sensors have a life of 100,000 miles. after that they get "lazy" and give out poor signal) The way the engine monitors the cat converters is by looking at the O2 sensors.. if they're over 70% percent different it sets a p0420 or p0430 code.

the yaw rate thing is just a calibration issue:

p.s. I can get the cats for 150 a piece if you need new ones, but you guys don't. the typical catalytic converter lasts 250,000 miles or more in my experience.

Fishercole,

That fault that the person has found, as far as I'm concerned, has no bearing on the ABS system. That code is an engine code and is not sending a check engine light so at this point I don't think you should be too concerned with it. The rig still seems to be running good eh? You are dealing with the ABS and I would not let anyone tell you that there is something else wrong. If the engine system is not throwing a check engine light and it is running good stick with the issue of Brakes! One thing at a time. You just need someone to be able too read the brake codes which are different from the engine codes, and you need an ABS tester to do so.

Toytruck, thanks for the reply. Have you had this condition before? Where is the best place to buy the oxygen sensor (air/fuel sensor)?

thank you all for replying. I now have a maintenance light on but im pretty sure i just need an oil change. As for the yaw sensor I was told by a guy that works at big o tires to take apart the center consol to see the yaw sensor. I didn't want to do that and wanted to wait and see what was written here on the forums before i start taking things apart that i have zero exp with. The car seems to run well but in 4lo it makes this "clicking" sound same "clicking" sound if i slid on snow. I'm not sure if this is something i need to be concerned about or not. Oh and a head light just went out haha but i can fix that one.

Problem with 93 4-runner

I have an o2 4-runner and the check engine and vsc lights came on. Changed the oxygen sensor and the lights went out and no problems for over 30,000 miles since. Hope this helps.

uhhh these guys have all kinds of places they get toyota parts. sidney always has a long list. let me see if i can find one
www.sparkplugs.com is one

here's sidney's list:

The oxygen sensor is listed on their website, see the part lookup system from the 3 Toyota dealerships listed below which have the best prices out there.

Avoid Bosch parts and in my opinion other makes of tune up parts instead stick with OEM Toyota parts like Denso, NGK and Yazaki (yes I received Yazaki spark plug wires for my 1995 4-Runner from 1sttoyotaparts).For places to buy OEM Toyota parts for very low price and OEM tune up parts sold aftermarket see below:

Available at:

http://www.toyotapartsales.com (1-866-221-4696)
http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/partscat.html (10% shipping by Fed Ex or free shipping with $100 & over speak to Roger at 1-888-271-3948)
http://www.toyotadiscountparts.com (free shipping with $100 & up)
http://www.toyotapartsandservice.com (part # lookup)

OEM tune up parts (also starters, alternators, fuel pumps, etc) sold aftermarket:

http://www.densoaftermarket.com
http://www.densoproducts.com
http://www.sparkplug.com
http://www.ngksparkplugs.com (use coupon code "dodgetalk" to get extra 10% off)
http://www.rockauto.com
http://www.toyotaownersonline.com/pu...arkplugs06.pdf

The best brand of aftermarket timing chain parts to use on the 20R & 22R series Toyota motors are:

http://www.engnbldr.com
http://www.mizumoauto.com
http://www.22r.biz
http://www.rpmrons.com/toyotatiming.html

I'm having the same issue on our '01 4Runner. I only need 2 02 sensors right? Is this the right part?
