spare sidewall worn

I lowered the spare and had a look at it last night and this is what I noticed. The sides have been worn a bit due to rubbing. I bought the vehicle a week ago but I can tell the wheel has never been lowered until yesterday. Anyway, is this an indication that the wheel was held up too tight or not tight enough?

ToyotaToday,

I did not see the pic on my first post. It looks like it has worn through 2 layers of side wall. I would say not to use it, you could have a side wall blowout at high temps. With a new spare you could put a piece of foam rubber at that rub spot to avoid wear on a new tire. Sorry I did not see the pic on my work computer.

No worries. Thanks for your help jetwhine. Yeah, maybe putting a layer of rubber between the tire and the metal support would prevent this.

I need to get new tires any way, so I will replace all 5. It will be expensive though.
