Mytmic821,

Maybe you have a faulty brake pedel switch when cold. Maybe when sitting for a long period of time the switch will stick the first brake application and after that it works fine. You might try shooting some WD40 on the switch and see if it will fix the problem.

I have the same problem with my 92 4 runner. I replaced the bushings because of the play in the shifter now I Cant get it out of park. it was working just fine any ideas? I cant find the switch under the dash. break light come on so if the switch for the brakes and the safety release are the same it should work.
help if you can.
thanks
Gary

How did things work out? Brake transmission shift interlock solenoid (BTSI is the general term, some manufacturers use different names)... Releases the shifter lock when the brake is applied, it's usually right in the console with the shifter or can be remotely mounted by cable operation. Might be worth a look in there to see if it's moving, make sure it's plugged in and getting power/ground when brake is applied. I know these posts are a bit old, so hopefully things got fixed for you.
