Have you ever noticed a "thump" once when you release the brakes. If I'm driving along, stop at a red light, then I release my brakes, there is a "thump".
What is that? Someone told me it could be the slip yoke? Or driveline? The fix is to simply grease it.
Your input is greatly appreciated as I would like to get this fixed.
That is the problem. You should grease them every other oil change. Molybdenum desulfide lithium base grease I believe will be the stuff. The propeller shaft is the issue.

Ok, I did some searching around and more research. There are 6 zerk fittings in total. My question is, when i pump the grease into each zerk fitting, where or how does the old grease exit?
Apparently, I need to use two types of grease according to the manual for the different zerks.
Yes that is correct. 2 types. On the drive shaft "u" joint fittings at each end of the shaft the grease will come out of the joint. When you see it coming out that should be enough. On the propeller shaft (slip joint) just enough grease to see it move about 1/4 inch. That is all I put in mine and it is enough as far as I am concerned. I have not found any specs on this procedure but it works for me.
I lubed the spider and slip yoke today, drove around a bit, but did not notice the thump. Looks like it worked but I'm hoping I am not speaking too soon. If this fixes it for 6 months to year, it's not so bad then. I'll see it as a reminder to lube the drive shaft.
By the way, it was a lot easier than I thought. I was reading some of the post from other forums and it sounded more difficult than need be.
The only thing that has stopped me from lubing up the drive shafts is finding the right stuff (NLGI No.2 Lithium Base Chassis Grease) & (NLGI No. 2 Molybdenum Disulfide Lithium Base Chassis Grease).
All I have seen around is High Temp grease and general purpose. (Autozone, Walmart, Harbor Freight)

I didn't want to take any chance and went to a Toyota dealer. It was $9 CDN for a tube. The parts guy told me I can use the same tube for both the slide yoke and spider.
I drove the 4runner this morning and noticed that the thumping came back, but it was a lot softer, which leads me to believe I may need to add more grease.

I had the same thumping issue with my 2007 4Runner, when I greased the shaft, it took about 50-60 pumps with the grease gun to get it to start moving when I pumped it indicating it was getting full... Don't hesitate to keep greasing it, any excess will push it's way out through the slip joint splines when you drive it.
