Grinding Noise and Sensation

I had new front brake pads installed and the rotors turned on my 04 4runner about 3 years ago. About 1 year later i had the rotors turned again but the pads were still good, the rotors were turned to the minimum. I had my brakes inspected by a mechanic about 4 months ago and ended replacing the rear pads and turning the rear rotors but the mechanic told me the front was fine.

For about a month now I've been getting a grinding noise coming from the front end when braking at slower speeds. I assumed it was metal on metal and I needed to replace the front brakes and rotors. I just took off my front wheels and checked the pads and the pads look great, I compared them to new pads and they have a ton of material left on them.

Any idea what could be causing the grinding noise? Only happens while braking.

When you checked the pads did you look at both the inside and outside pads? They can wear at different rates. Sometimes brakes can sound bad depending on the type of pad and rotor but still be fine. Have you gone offroading lately? Maybe some gravel is trapped in between the caliper and rotor.

I have noticed differences in the brands of pad. I like oem personally the aftermarket stuff changes things. This is in general I don't have a 4runner.
