2005 4Runner Front Shock Replacement
I have a 2005 SR5 4Runner that has front shock absorbers with coil springs mounted around the shocks between the upper wishbone and a coil retaining plate or cup that is integral to the lower shock body. These are not struts and I do NOT have the fancier XREAS suspension. The shocks show some sign of leakage (oil residue on the lower shock body).
I bought new shocks to replace the originals but when I tried to remove one of them, I found I could not lower the wheel/spindle assembly enough to completely remove the coil spring tension thus preventing me from removing the shock.
What is the proper method of replacing these shocks? Are spring compressors required? The non-OEM manual I looked at for the '05 4Runner did not address the coil tension issue.
It looks like one MIGHT be able to disconnect the lower wishbone from the wheel/spindle assembly and further lower the wishbone to release the spring tension. Is that a safe, reasonable approach? Are special tools required to disconnect the lower wishbone from the spindle assembly?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
