Wondering how some older ones are holding up

Thinking of buying a 2010 4 runner and I have some questions. How does the frame welds hold up as far as rust goes? I have a 05 tundra and I am not happy with the rust. Also, how often does the driveshafts need to be greased and does it take 2 different types of grease like the tundra? Last, I need to haul a 3000# boat 6 hours once a year over some small mountains. Can the 4 runner handle it? Thanks for any replies. Phil

You want to haul a heavy boat for 6 hours over mountains? I would suggest looking at the 2005-2009 generation with the optional V-8.

phillipgo,

Yes there is 2 different types of gresse for the running gear. Lithium base molybdinum diesulfied grease for the propeller shaft and lithium grease for the rest. I do a grease job every other oil change especially on the propeller shaft, which tends to clunk if not grease on a regular basis. As far as the 4runner for towing I would recomend the V-8. The V-6 has more horse power than the V-8, but the V-8 has more torgue for towing. As far as the year goes I don't know anything about the 2010 but the previous years are awesome. You won't go wrong with a 4Runner.

No way could I afford 40 grand. I don't think the V8 is even available anymore anyway. When I say mountains its not like the Rockies.
What do some of you tow?

V-8 is not offered anymore on the 4-runner.

Tow a 22' center console on a tandem axle alum trailer, whole rig is over 4500# and the 2004 V6 pulls it better than the larger V8 Mountaineer.
