It's still early, but eventually we may get snow. Anyway, is it a good idea to lock the differential when driving on roads covered in snow?

Yes that is when it is most effective. It should not be used on dry pavement. The diff lock loves mud and snow.

If you're in 4wd, then you don't really need to lock the diff.

Locking a rear diff will cause the rear-end to step out when under power. Most drivers don't have the driving skill to deal with it.
