If the 4runner was put through these test, I assume it would not have a problem as it has true 4 wheel drive. I also assume locking the differential would not be any help in any of these scenarios, correct?

As far as I'm concerned if they included the 4runner it would pass the test with the diff. locked. The diff lock supplies 50% to the front and 50% to the rear. Even if the front wheels spin the back wheels are spinning the same speed. It would be like having possi front and rear as they spin equal. With that test you probably would not see the front spin as the back would spin just as much as the front, and it would climb without problems. The Highlander if I recall does not have the center diff lock. The diff lock is the difference.
With ice under all wheels the only thing that would help would be chains.
