Rotor Removal Difficulties

Need some suggestion regarding the rear rotors on my 4Runner.

It is the 06 model, and I let the brake pads go too long,, now one pad was worn down beyond the liner.

Thought it would be a good idea to change rotors.

However, I cannot get the rotors off.

I have done the rubber mallet thing.

I have put in the M8 bolts to push the rotor from the hub and hit it with the mallet.

Stilll hung up on the emergency brake shoes. I cannot find a cover on the back plate like I have on my Sienna.

Yes, and the emergency brake is not set.

Any suggestions?

toyo4fun,

You will have to back off the parking brake shoes so they will clear the grove that has been put in there by the wear. If they were over adjusted they will wear a grove into the rotor and thus makes it hard to remove unless they are unajusted. And if it is the same as my 03 then you will need to get to the adjustment under the center console. Which means you have to remove the center console.

Toyo4Fun,

There should also be a rubber cover on the back side of the brake so you can access the shoe adjustment. You need to back off that adjustment to loosen the shoes. I thought you might have done that already but forgot to ask, You can tell if you are going the right way by spinning the wheel as you trun the adjustment to see is it is tighting or loosening.

why not just use a disk grinder or die grinder to take the ridge off the rotors sufficiently to slide the caliper off? you are tossing the rotors, right? Probably ok even if you're having em turned.
with the car in neutral, and both wheels off the ground, the rotors should turn (with the ground off ridge spot) to where the caliper can slide right off!
