4th Generation 06 4runner TPMS

I want to buy extra factory rims and put on winter tires for my 4runner (used rims with used TPMS). Don't know how those pressure sensors will work out with the TPMS of the car. Does anybody has any ideas? Thanks in advance.

ryantran,

If you stick with same year and type of rim I don't see any problems. But if you put something on that is not compatible then there could possibly be issues. The worst case is a tire pressure light indication on the cluster if they dont have a sensor. If it were me doing it I would stay with stock that way there would be not lights and no issues.

Thanks for the comments Jetwhine. I definitely go with the stock (identical rim and tire) with the one on the car right now. What I am saying is that I will buy used rims on ebay with used pressure sensors already on it (used stock, same year and type). I don't know if the TPMS on car will recognize those sensors when I put those rims on.

ryantran,

It should, I don't see any reason that it would not. You know same-same should not be a problem unless one of the sensors would be bad. You should be able to find that out just by installing them. Also you might have to reset the system when putting on the other rims. When you instal them you might want to pull the negative cable on the battery to keep things from getting fouled up.

Thanks guys. The first thing I need to do now is saving money to buy those rims and TIRES.

Hmmmm??

I think there might be more to it....IIRC each sensor has it's own number printed on it (sensor is in the special valve stem and number is viewable when tire is off rim (inside the wheel).

Have a look at this site....it might have been where I read it?

http://www.toyotatpms.com/

I think each car is programmed with 5 numbers from 5 sensors, otherwise you might pick up a low tire signal from the guy parked next to you with another runner. The numbers would have to be re-programmed by dealer for each riim switch. (aka summer to winter to summer rims) Do some googling to verify, as I might be wrong on this though.

I bought a cheap set of 01 tundra rims w/o tpms sensors and plan to just ignore the light durring the 3 months of winter rim/tire use. If I have to pay the dealership to reprog the sensors twice each year then I might as well just pay someone to swap the tires instead. NOW if you summer rims are in excellent shape and want to keep the that way, this is N/A to your situation.
