The 3rd gen 4runner came out in 96 and lasted until 2002, with minor cosmetic changes inbetween.
As far as getting a truck or a 4runner, I am in a similar dilemma as I am kinda thinking of selling mine. It just boils down to whether you want to carry people or stuff. I REALLY like being able to carry people because it's more fun off roading and going on trips. The 4runner is also REALLY comfortable for camping because you can sleep inside instead of a tent. After sleeping in the back of the 4runner I'll never go back to a tent unless I have to. However, my wife says we almost never take people on trips and we can sleep in the back of the truck bed with a shell. Currently I want to get a xtra cab tacoma, but that might change tomorrow...and then again the next day. It's up to you, can't help much. I've even posted polls asking this same thing and it's always come out 50/50.
