2010 Limited Sunroof Exploded today!

MY wife was comming home from work today when she thought a gun had gone off next to her ear. The sunroof on our 2010 4-Runner Limited had exploded. Thankfully the inner cover was closed or she would have been coverd with glass! As you can see from the pictures the glass is pushed up from the inside so I know it was'nt hit from the outside. Has anyone else had this happen? I have owned a lot of vehicles with sunroofs and have never had this happen. Needless to say It goes to the dealer first thing in the morning. It has less than 2000 miles on it!

Wow! Holy crap! Glad to hear your wife was OK. Happy to know it's under warranty too. Never heard of anything happening like this before!

Well, the Dealer determined something hit one corner of the sunroof outside and caused it to shatter and the reason for it being pushed out was the pressure inside the vehicle when going down the road.

countryal,

My thought is that the window was adjusted wrong from the factory. It looks like there was too much preload on the closed side and under the right conditions it cracked. The cracks are going perpendicular to the car and not in line with the car. What ever the cause, I'm glad that no one was hurt and hope that the dealer will get it right when repaired. Good luck.

The weather was sunny and hot 95 or better. My first thought was heat build up between the glass and the inside cover. then the temp change inside with the air cond. The service writer showed me how it looked like it cracked from the pass. rear corner to the drivers front corner. I would take some more pictures but its at the dealer now. I have contacted my insurance company and they are to send an adjuster out Monday to look at it. Bad thing now is, there is not a replacement in Jacksonville(We are in Alabama) so they are trying to get one out of California. It will be at least Wednesday before it gets here.

I have never seen a sun roof crack like yours did, just driving along and bang it blows up. I agree it seems it was under a mechanical stress, from being installed wrong. Tough to prove, but I feel the Insurance will cover the replacing costs.
I would also call Toyota and get their input, as it could have caused your wife to get badly hurt and crash.

I had the rear window on a 1980 Saab explode while I was driving vehicle. First thing I did was feel the back of my neck to check for blood. I assumed someone had shot at the back window with a shotgun.

Never did figure out why it happened. Vehicle was a few years old when this happen.

I know this thread is a bit old already. I had a Scion tC and for a while there were problems with the sunroofs spontaneously shattering. Look into that and hopefully Toyota comes clean. I doubt anything hit the sunroof.

I've heard of this in the tc's and there has Been 2 or 3 in the 3rd gen Lexus GS's. I'll try to find the one on clublexus that gave pictures and details. Did Toyota warrantee this or did insurance have to cover it?

Is the dealer fixing it under warranty? Or are you having to work with insurance? That's nuts! Hope the new one lasts a bit longer.
