My Sienna Problems :(

My dad's company car (demo) Sienna is having some problems....
only 2300kms on it...

Today, I was getting pissed off at this Accord driven by some old man tailing me on Steeles, so I decide to put him in my dust when we stopped at a light. When the light turned green, I floor it, the van accellerates, then suddenly at about 30km/h, hesitate, power goes off for a second, I see the Accord zoot over the next lane and smoke me, then power comes back in a large surge and accellerate fine to 80km/h...when I stopped trying...

I tried again, and again, hesitation/no power at about 30km/h, then everything back to normal. The tranny is always still in first gear, and the engine rev's do not skyrocket...as would be the case if the tranny slips a gear.

it only does this from a standing start 3/4 to full throttle accelleration. Any ideas?

VSC?

Does the Sienna in question have the available VSC - Vehicle Stability Control system???

Sounds like VSC to me, which would use an engine gov'ner to dampen the engine output so the wheels are allowed only as much power are current conditions dictate. It would also use the ABS to slow down the wheels so they gain friction with the pavement, etc.

no...it's the base model...the CE...

My dad says it's because when accellerating hard, the fuel sploshes backwards...and the fuel pickup is in the front, so during hard accelleration, with an fairly empty tank, you will starve the engine...causing the hesitation...

I dunno if he is right though...

I don't think so. At least that's not what's printed on the brochure for the 2003 Sienna CE.

I've actualy been having this problem with my father's car. Sometimes when accelerating you can have the gas pedal pretty far down and the car will just sputter like it's fighting to give the engine gas in bursts for a while. Most of the other times it will be driving fine... His car is a Chevrolet Malibu (I know this is a Toyota forum...). This happens on a full tank just about as often as it happens on a near empty one. Quite the mystery...

In my experience, every time that my 2001 sienna is floored (like merging onto or off 404 / 401 the CEL comes on and there is code stored for a lean condition.

From a stand still ithesitates around 35km/h.... not a full power loss though. Is this the Transmission? Engine fuel system or Air intake system? causing this????
