98 sienna shift solenoid valve

i just recently bought a used 98 sienna. it has about 154000 miles on it and runs great. just recently it wouldn't shift into overdrive, the check engine light came on and was diagnosed as P0770- Shift solenoid valve E. i was wondering if this would be the cause of the problem and if it is, would it be safe to drive it until i can the repairs done, also, about how much would it cost for this repair?

My wife's Sienna (1998) just threw the same code: P0773 and a P0770. (shift solenoid E).

From what I've read elsewhere, that code indicates that the solenoid is out of spec (open/short).

The ECM will then avoid locking the overdrive. This will certainly hurt your fuel economy, but won't damage the car, as long as you don't drive 90 :-)

I am hoping somebody here can give us specifics on how to troubleshoot this. i.e. Where is the plug for the shift solenoid so I can check to see if it's the solenoid, or something else... (The solenoid indicates failure at 8 ohms or less, and 100K ohms or more... (at least on a Camry).

Any help?!
