using 5w20 in 2000 toyota sienna fine?

Hi,

I was wondering if using 5w20 in 2000 toyota sienna fine?

The Van has 148,454 km on it and was bought new and has been using 5w30.


The reason I am asking is because my parents bought motor oil that was on sale at wal-mart and the picked up a few 4.73L bottle of 5w20 for $10.00 but they threw out the receipt. So not to waste good oil, is it okay to temporary switch oil grade for 3 or 4 oil change?

Too thin in my opinion. The engine was designed to run with 5w30. A thinner oil in an engine with over 100k km isn't a good idea. Get the proper grade oil, and use the thinner stuff to top off between oil changes.

As a side note, I would NOT do that in a newer sienna that has the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) as the oil viscosity is critical in the control of the valve timing.
The phase of the intake cam is controlled using the motor oil.
