Well, it looks like the "cubby hole" aka pocket is upside down in the 2nd pic. attach the brackets loosely to the stereo, turn the pocket the right way up, and everything should line up.

Yes, you have the pocket upside down in the second pic. Compare it to the first pic. Put the bracket back on the cubby, just like in the first pic, then see if the bracket lines up. It should. I think that you want the far left hole on the radio and the left hole marked 'T'.

No, you'll need to move the stereo forward one screw hole position in the bracket. If you remove the stereo face with the brackets like you have them now, the main body of the stereo will be recessed into the dash.

Thanks for the tips. I have a bigger problem right now. The radio in jack on my stereo is on one side, and the radio cable on my car is on the other side.
The cable from my car isn't nearly long enough. I pulled it, but it doesn't extend.
And my car has several female cables. My stereo only has 1 male input. Why?
Old stereo on top, new on bottom. Notice how the old one has so many inputs but the new one only has one. Will it still work?

Does it look like the plug you have will plug into the radio that you have? If it will plug in, slide it in and reach under from the drawer underneath and plug it up.
you'll need an adapter harness to connect the wire harness that came with your new stereo to the factory harness in the dash. You just match up with the stereo's harness wire colors to the adapter harness wire colors, then plug the adapter harness into the factory harness. It's as as simpler as that.
Ok, I went and got the one that I took out of my van. When I took it out it only had one plug plugged up to it. Yet, it has another. The extra one that wasn't in use on mine looks just like the one on the left in your picture. My radio doesn't have the big plug from the center of your picture. It has a different one. I think the left plug on mine ran the steering wheel controls. Now that I think about it there were those. Do you have steering wheel controls?
Yes, but I don't think I'll need them if that involves the extra cost of purchasing wiring harnesses.
If only I knew about this earlier !

Do you have the buttons on the steering wheel? If so you should have the plug somewhere in there. If someone switched them out previously they might have stuck it up in there somewhere. Do any of your plugs match up? Take a pic of your plugs for us.
Here is the pic from mine. This is from a 2000 with a factory amp. Look under the drawer for the amp. The connector on the left is the main one the one on the right is the control one.
None of the plugs match up. Furthermore, none are labeled. If someone could help me identify them, that would be great - I think I already have the harness (included with the stereo).
Harness - I assume I have to strip the wires right?
Cables - from left to right (Gray, Gray, White, Gray).

I didn't understand your pic. uibalnme is right. The best way to do the job is with the harness adapter. You can go from here but you need to know all of the wire colors. Do you have the diagram for the aftermarket radio?
That is literally half the battle. From there you need the pin diagram for the connectors or the wiring diagram for the car.
It's generally considered a hack job to cut into the factory wires. You need these, they would make this really easy.
