Question about MAF sensor in a 2000 Sienna

Recently had the master cylinder replaced at the corner garage. It's a single man shop, the kind of place one can hang and chat with the mechanic. Shortly after the master cylinder was replaced, the CEL light came on showing P0100 and P0110. I don't know if there's a connection between what the mechanic did and the trouble code, but he had that area torn apart.

He checked the connection and it looked good. Light was reset.

When the light reappeared, he removed the sensor and used some MAF spray cleaner on it, but saw he hesitated when installing it. Light was reset.

Regardless, the light is back on again and he's suggesting to replace the MAF sensor for some $200. I took it apart and all looks well. Reassembled and light remains on.

The part looks like an airplane engine, with an open end. Is it possible to install it either way.... and if so does it go with the open end towards the air cleaner, or the closed end towards the air cleaner. It was installed with the open end facing the air cleaner.

Suggestions?

You could try looking here at Toyota Nation's web site for Toyota Camry Gen 3 and 4 forums. The Sennia is made from Camry parts. Just do a search in the forums. Someone might have posted a simliar problem/solution.

Make sure it's all sealed up properly, including the box with the filter in it.

The main reason I took it apart was to check for something loose or not sealed properly. All looked well.

I'm curious if it gets installed with the open end of the cone facing the air cleaner, or if the closed end of the cone faces the air cleaner.

Also want to try some spray cleaner on the terminals and sensor. Is the CRC brand OK to use? I see some recommending it and others have posted a warning about not using it on certain types of MAF's.

I also see online posts for checking resistance between certain terminals on Toyota MAF's, but all have been for later models. What should the resistance be between certain pins on a 2000?

I didn't think it could be installed backwards.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion in detail. I will print your comments out and carry it to the technician as references.

There are VOM readings that can be taken across the terminals. I'd like to find out what readings should be shown across the various terminals. Have also been unable to determine what those should be for a model year 2000.

Thx.

Well, found the answer and will post if it might help someone else someday.

Between the center terminal and one adjoining, the reading at 68F should be between 2.21 and 2.69

Mine reads open and the car has started to occassionally "buck" on acceleration. CEL light remains on for P0110 and P0100, and instantly reappears after code attempt clear is made. Looking forward to installing a new MAF when it comes in tomorrow.
