2000 Sienna Brake Light Assembly

I accidentally broke the 2 plastic white pegs while prying the brake assembly off. These pegs are threaded into the assembly housing and inserted into the recepticle attached to the vans body. Toyota says they sell replacements for the recepticle (part# 90467-17016), but not the pegs.

Has anyone had the misfortune of breaking these pegs while removing the lens assembly to change a bulb?

What did you do or use to replace them?

Thanks in advance for your ideas and help.

I have done the same thing ( broken the pegs) !! And also on both sides. Did you find a solution to this -- Napa and Advance auto both do not carry the pegs and ask me to go to Toyota. I am planning to just use some super glue and try it and tape up the assembly -- in no mood to spend $55 for each tail light panel, unless the light covers are broken!
Would like to hear how you addressed the problem!

I wish I had read this first. I thought the front of the brake light assembly was held in by a lip, since the only bolts were in the back. Then I discovered the two broken pegs. Fortunately, I was able to fix things somewhat.

I drilled out the plastic pegs that were broken off in the assembly. I pulled out the other halves that were in the van with vise grips. Then I correctly removed the other side's brake light. I used a thick plastic spatula that was flexible enough to get all the way behind it. It was hard to pull with that, but I finally heard a load snap. I thought I busted them again after that noise, but they were intact. They are just that hard to remove.

There wasn't much thread left after drilling. The pegs broke up when I was trying to unscrew them (Toyota didn't design them to break on the other side of the plastic bolt), so I had to drill larger and scrape out what I could. The pegs fit very tightly however, so I was able to screw one of the good ones into the bottom hole and reinstall both lights. The result looks good and functions perfectly.

If anyone finds a way to buy these, let us know. If I'm ever in a salvage yard, I'll grab all four.
