Overheating thru Coolant Resevoir Tank

Greetings,

I have a 1998 Toyota Sienna with 195K on it. I purchased it with no keys, a broken Window, 2 broke door handles and a bad radiator. I replaced everything and it started up. I drove it around town on some short trips. Everything seemed fine. Today I took it on a 180 mile round trip. About 125 mile into it on my way back I stopped for the 3rd time on the trip. I noticed my coolant resevoir had water in it boiling up and blowing out the over flow. I had to stop several times on the way home to let it cool off and add more water. I never let it get into the red. The whole trip up until that point the Temp Gauge never moved from just above 1/3rd of the way up.

When I got home I pulled the thermostat and placed it into a pot of water and let it boil. The thermostat opened fully. I put it back in and let it idle for a while with the radiator cap off, filling it up as needed. I then took it for a ride and the same thing started again.

I have 2 YouTube videos of what is going on.

Please take a look and offer any feedback that might help me solve this problem.

Here is another

Thanks...

Looks like your spurting clear water. Did you use the special type of red antifreeze?

Do you expect to contain the fluid under pressure without the cap on?

The cap is on in the second video. Do I need special red coolant?

With distilled water, avoids calcium and mineral contaminants.

Some likely problems.
1. Trapped air pocket -- Open inside heater to high and run out air pockets with cap off. Fill with water, and repeat. If this fixes it, replace water with antifreeze (pink or red Toyota-- Red 100% is easier to use -- dilute to 60%. Pink requires draining and filling, so air pockets can form.)

2. Bad water pump.

3. Remember to replace hoses (3) if you are in that area or at least the 2 radiator hose. One by-pass hose is hard to get.

Looked at your video: Looks like air being purged from the system. Not boil over. After it spills over, clamp off over fill tube, fill with water, cap and remove clamp off on over fill tube. Test for a week. If alls well drain, and fill with 60% antifreeze (Toyota red).
