the lights on my instrument panel are not working. All the gauges and warning lights seem fine. Before I try to take the dashboard apart, is there a specific fuse I should check first?

Did they all stop working at once, or did they go out a couple at a time? If they all went out at once, you probably have an electrical (fuse,short) issue. If they went out over time, you'll have to pull out the instrument cluster and change the bulbs. See thread here, or do another search of the forum.

I did this and it was not that hard. Just take your time, and replace all the bulbs while you're at it.
