Transmission solenoid 98 sienna

my check engine light was on, so i took the 1998 sienna to a mechanic he said the tranny solenoid needs to be replaced. I am not sure if i believe him but he wants to charge me $435.00 for the work, is this a fair price? should i go to toyota and have them do it? does anyone know what will happen if i do not change the part? thanks everyone

I've done some research for you.
The transmission has several solenoids, depending on which one, it might be pretty easy to access and would not cost $$$$ to replace. I might be wrong but this transmission is the same as Camry and Avalon unit. They probably share the same part. In this case, a local junkyard might have the part for you. Some one please chime in. By the way, the brand new transmission is about $1860 with core.
Did you try to get an estimate from AMMCO?
They'll give you free diagnostic.

Worst thing that could happen is you got stuck, and it won't shift into gear.
Get AAA plus and they will tow the car up to 100 miles free.
BTW, I suppose to fly back to Boston today but all fights were cancelled because of the storm.
I don't know should I be or

Ronman:

I have a 98 Sienna at independent Toyota repair shop right now with same problem waiting on repair estimate for P0770 Shift Solenoid E Malfunction. What was your outcome/repair charge?

FYI - Found a doc online that indicates Shift Solenoid #1 backs up Shift Solenoid #2 and visa-versa in the event of failures. If both fail you can still drive car manually using column gear selector. L=1st gear, 2=3rd gear, and D=Overdrive.

depending on the solenoid, you usually have to drop the pan and the valve body. so 300ish in labor is not that bad.

On my friends Accord, when the Shift Solenoid went bad it would not automatiicaly up or down shift. You had to manually go into d1, shift up to d2 etc and down. Also 1st and 2nd gears were inaccessable. Taking off in 3rd wasn't so bad, just kinda silly to only have a high and low gear.
