2004 sienna door lock programming?

I just took possession of a 2004 sienna. Great car, great build, great ride.

However, the automatic door locking scheme leaves a lot to be desired. It automatically locks all the doors as soon as you take it out of park (which I guess isn't terrible), but it also automatically unlocks all the doors as soon as you put it into park. My feeling is that is an unsafe practice.

The manual provides a procedure for changing these settings, which involves turning the ignition to "ON", pressing and holding the main door lock for 5 seconds in either the forward or back position, and depending upon which position the gearshift is in, you have a choice of 4 lock/unlock settings.

The problem is I have gone through all the steps about twenty times, and it always reverts to the factory settings (which I really don't want).

Anybody been through this? Any suggestions? I surely wouldn't rule out user error here. Thanks!

Answering my own question:

I was able to get this thing to work this afternoon. I now understand how this programming works - you have to cancel one function before the other function will take effect. Example - I wanted the doors to lock at 12 MPH, and I went through the procedure for that setting. However, I never cancelled the "doors lock when you get out of park" setting, so that always took precedence. Once I figured that out, I was able to cancel all the factory settings and set the door locking exactly the way I wanted it.

In all fairness, that info is in the manual, but they only tell you at the end of the section and it's not really emphasized.
