USA CV Axle Disassembly

In the process of changing the wheel bearing, I damaged the threads on the spindle (outer knuckle) of the CV axle. How can I get this apart so that a machinist can redo the threads. I am trying to save a ridiculously expensive part. It is on a 2004 Sienna with 4WD. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Why do you have to take it apart? Just take the whole axle out.

Alternatively, have you tried cleaning the threads up with a threadfile? You should be able to get one at sears for $15 or so.

The threads are too damaged to repair with a file. I want to take it apart so a machinist can redo them. Thanks for the suggestion.

Not up on this specific axle but in most cases the outer joint is permanently attached to the axle.

Call around to machine shops or dealers to determine if they have a die that can be used to reform the threads. This would be the easiest approach. Remember the treads are metric.

To take the axle apart as far as you can you will need to remove the inner boot. Once off, there is typically a clip inside the inner CV joint housing that prevents the joint from pulling apart. If so, remove this and the joint will come apart. Once apart there normally is another clip holding the rest of the joint that is still attached to the axle.

Another alternative is to also remove the outer boot leaving only the outer joint and bare axle. A good machine shop should have a lathe large enough that the axle will slide into the hollow spindle of the lathe and then the CV joint can be chucked for turning. Wrap the exposed part of the joint with something like thin food plastic wrap to keep out any debris, this should not effect the cutting operation.

You will need to install new CV boot bands when reinstalling the boots.

Worse case shop around for an axle, you should be able to find one for about 1/3 of the cost of a dealer.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am exploring the options. A new axle is $463 and a used one so far is $275. No after market or rebuilt ones available. Chances are I can find a way to repair the one I have. thanks

Is that what the dealer is quoting you? A new one cost about $150.
