Shift Lever Moves Side to Side (2005)

Shift lever on my 2005 Sienna was difficult to move into gear positions for side to side shifting "4-D" and "2-L". Something has snapped internal to the shifter assy and now shift lever won't stay in "D" or "L" positions. Sensor picks up the shift if you hold the lever in those positions i.e. "L" vs. "2". However, shifter just floats freely between. No issue for up and down shifting "P" to "4-D" and so forth. Has anyone ever experienced? I sure hope I don't have to replace entire shifter assy! Looks mighty expensive!
Our van only has ~42K miles on it.
