Mystery engine noise

I have a 2004 Sienna. This morning I went out to start it and heard a loud knocking/clicking sound coming from the engine. Tried to start it and it will not even turn over, but a few of the dash lights come on. Now here's the wierdest part. After trying to start it, I sat there and suddenly a noise starts (sounds like the turn signal blinking), then the engine knock starts. But when I opened the door to get out, it stopped! Still can't start. Seems like a battery thing, but I would love to avoid getting a new one. Any suggestions?

You were never able to start the engine?

Was the engine ever able to turn over or try to start?

Check the battery cables for corrosion, damaged cables. Might be the starter but need more info.

It started fine last night, so I will check the cables.
