Sienna Sliding Doors

I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna. I have had no problems with it except for the doors. I have 98000 miles on it.

Last year the Drivers side power slider door broke. It wouldn't open or close. The problem was the Cable/Motor and Toyota wanted $1500 to fix it. I didn't want to spend the money so I use it in manual mode.

Now the other door doesn't work. It only opens about 10 inches then gets stuck. I think it is the same type of problem....the Motor or cable...

Has anyone heard of these things going bad?

Does anyone have a fix for them?

Any help or suggestions....besides don't buy power dooors!

HI,
I had the same problem with the power door on my '04. I too was quoted something like $1800 to fix it. I had the dealer remove the motor/cable assembly so the door functioned manually (and quite normally). On a subsequent visit to the dealer, the service manager said that because I had originally purchased the extra warranty coverage (even though the door broke long after the warranty expired) he could get Toyota to repair the door for free - which they did!

So bug your dealer about it - it seems there is a secret warranty if you complain enough about it. This power door issue is a well known Toyota problem for Siennas.

Good luck!

My 2005 made a load noise on the left rear sliding power door when I opened it (have only 37000 miles) found the top rear hinge black bracket that is held on by 2 bolts (10mm size) very loose, thightened the bolts and have appeared to have solved the porblem ,just thought I would pass on the Imf. for what its worth.

10/1/2008 cable on the power sliding door of our 2004 Toyota Sienna broke. Car has 50K miles. Door would not close properly. Had to take to deal, repair was $1,635.00 12/4/2008 both sliding doors could not be opened they were frozen closed, could not open manually or automatically. By mid-day doors were able to be opened but passenger cable snapped. Cannot open the door all the way. PLEASE post a complaint to the NHTSA http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/index.cfm this is the only way that enough pressure can be put on Toyota to fix the problem.

sienna sliding door problem

I have an '05 Sienna that the passenger sliding door is not functioning properly on. The door will start to open automatically and then stop after a few inches. the cable seems to not be pulling it back on it's track. Then, if you go to shut it, it pulls forward and latches properly. My mechanic is seeking a wiring schematic for this system because he feels that it is a loss of power. Anyone got one? Regards.

Scary to read people go through all this trouble and not once in this thread did the term "reset" appear. I have a first generation '99 Sienna and the door froze and didn't work. I don't truely recall the procedure but disconnecting the negative terminal or removing the fuse while sliding and closing the door manually then instating the power fixes the problem in most cases. Save yourself from unneeded costly repairs.

Cool Slider problem and overall impressions

I leased a 2005 Toyota Sienna which now has 35,000 miles on it. The Left side slider is manual and does not always latch in the fully open position. This can be a problem if the van is on a downward slope. Any suggestions?
I hate dealerships so I just put up with it.
Overall this is the best vehicle I've owned. It quiet, comfortable, reliable, quick yet good on gas and very versatile inside. It’s FWD so I put snow tires on it for the winter and along with the traction control it’s unstoppable in the snow.
Negatives are few. My tranny seems to hang in first gear at low speeds and startles you when you negotiate a turn and get back on the gas. I can't believe there is no warning chime if you leave your headlights on!!
I will be looking to replace it in October. Maybe with leather and a sunroof this time.

Sienna Sliding Door CABLE problems!! PLEASE READ!

Hello, my name is Chris Mitchell,

We own a Toyota Sienna XLE 2004. Back in November 2008, the driver sliding door cable snapped, making the door jam and unusable in "power" mode. Cable dangling out of its socket, we drove to our dealership to have it serviced. The repair came to over $1800!!!

After researching this issue on the internet, I'm finding that MANY people are experiencing the same problem!! I'm thinking that it doesn't necessarily have to do with mileage but perhaps more with age of vehicle ie: 4-5ish years old.

The PROBLEM:

The cable which drives the sliding door is completely exposed to elements. (you'll find it within the groove located under the rear side windows) This cable is made of some kind of metal (steel? who knows.) then coated with a black plastic/acrylic/rubber casing (such as an electrical wire). With time, the casing begins to dry and be brittle, causing it to crack and fall off the wire, leaving the wires completely vulnerable to getting wet, rust, freeze, etc, also rubbing extensively unprotected against the gears. Within a few months or even weeks, the metal cable wires snap thus getting caught in the mechanism. One thing leads to another and the whole cable snaps, making the door jam altogether.

The FIX:

Per my own experience at the dealership, and subsequently reading and researching many blog sites, the ONLY way to fix this issue is as follows: remove the entire door, remove and CHANGE the entire mechanism. Extremely costly, there's just no way around this. Asked if there was a way to simply change the cable, I was informed that the cable is part of the motor and that it is not a part that can be purchased OR repaired separately.

Any “RECALL” in sight? We can only hope!! But here’s where we need your help.

After speaking with Toyota’s Customer Service Relation (Headquarters), she explained that “recalls” happen when “enough” people call in and bring up issues (complaints) with their vehicles. Local Service Managers can also help petition to HQ on your behalf if they see a problem that may be a repetitive pattern. Service managers can relay this information to a factory representative and such.

What can you do?

First off, call this number: 1(800) 331-4331 (Customer Service Relations… they were VERY pleasant and helpful!) and tell them about your experience with the sliding door defect. They will give you a case number and send your issue higher up. Who know how many complaints they need before they consider recalls, but at least we’ll have done our best.

Second: If you haven’t already fixed your door, DO call your Service Manager in your area to set up an appointment to have the door fixed, AND open the lines for discussion for him to petition on your behalf about this problem which SO many people are having issues with.

Third: If you’ve already had the door fixed, DO NOT throw away your receipts!!! Cust. Serv. Rel. told me that if down the line Toyota comes out with a recall, YOU WILL BE RETROACTIVELY ENTITLED TO A FULL REFUND OF YOUR REPAIRS WITH PROOF OF PAYMENT!!! (aparently that goes for any problems which arise with Toyota vehicles! Good to know!) If by chance you’ve misplaced/lost/thrown out your receipt, I suggest you call your dealership ASAP and ask them to reprint one for you… they should be able to as long as you’re still in the system.

BOTTOM LINE:

You are NOT alone! If Toyota can see fit to recall a “clip” which is used to hold carpets, they SHOULD deal with this bigger issue too.

Our voice must seriously be heard, force in numbers!!!

Thank you so much for your help and attention!

Chris Mitchell (nazalys@attglobal.net)

I'm having issues with the power sliding door not fully latching when closing, causing the door to retract all the way open. The only thing that work is pushing the rear of the door in whilst closing.

Anyone else with this similar issue?

Is this a precursor to the total failures mentioned in this thread?

Canada 2004 power sliding door

we have the identical problem as kanukgirl a month ago at 120,000km-not covered under ECM. The $2,000.00 estimate was not an option! We are trying to get used to muscle power again. But I will file a complain as suggested and hope for the best.

2005 Sienna with same issue

The passenger rear door is FUBAR on my Sienna. I have a Platinum agreement and my local dealer says the repair is not covered.

Anyone heard of this? They want $2689 for the repair/replacement of the motor cable.

I would have thought this would be covered under the platinum agreement.

Based on the posts, even their repair costs seem high. Is it worth a 2 hour drive to visit the next closest dealer for me?
