Is it really safe to drive without the front exhaust pipe heat shield?

Hi

I have 2004 Sienna LE and recently I started to hear an annoying rattling/clanking noise from near the front seats when the car is stopped for a traffic signal. So I looked underneath the car and noticed that a metal piece around the front exhaust pipe was loose and a yellowish fabric was sticking out. I poked it with my umbrella and confirmed that this loose metal part was the cause of the noise. I brought my car into CarX and they said it was the font pipe heat shield that was loose and since they removed it, I wouldn't hear any more noise. They said if I want to fix it, I have to replace the entire front exhaust pipe which will cost around $1500. So I called the Toyota dealer and asked whether I have to replace the entire front exhaust to get this heat shield reinstalled, and they said it's is true and it's not worth it since it is going to be a major repair and told me that it's safe to drive around without the heat shield.

Is it really safe to drive without this part? Wasn't this there to serve a purpose? or if I drive around without this heat shield, is there anything that I should be cautios of?

Yes. Don't park on top of a pile of leaves in the fall. You should be fine.

You will be fine. Just think of all the cars in the world with aftermarket off-road exhaust-they don't have heat shields and they drive millions of miles per year.

Henry, if you really wanted to replace it, the front pipe retails for $279, and goes for $220 at the discount dealer I buy parts from online. There's about $25 worth of gaskets, too. An independent shop or muffler shop might put them on for you. But, no, you really don't need the shield.
