2008 Sienna LE - Correct Oil Level

Hello,

We recently purchased a used 2008 Sienna LE to replace our 2005 CE that was totaled in an accident. I've just done my first oil change and now trying to determine if I have the proper amount of oil in it. The reason I ask is last time I overfilled an engine (an '82 Subaru wagon) it leaked at the front oil seal, so I'm desperately trying to avoid a repeat of that.

The issue is, I'm having difficulty reading the oil stick. I started with dumping the old oil, then a new Toyota filter and o-rings. The owners manual calls for 6.4 quarts of oil with a new filter.

When held to the light, the oil level looks way over the top of the upper dot. The manual also states to check level when vehicle is level, but what is the best way to insure this is the case? I have the ability to lift the vehicle with a 2-1/2 floor jack, but on what part of the car would I use a level to insure I'm getting the correct reading?

Sorry for the novice question, and thanks in advance for any tips on doing this right.

Don't get yourself worked up too much. That dipstick is a PITA to read.
As long as the car is on a "level road" (e.g. not uphill/downhill) judging with your eyes, you are good.
As long as you drained the oil at the bottom drain plug (not syphon out), and changed the oil filter, and put no more than 6.4 qt in, you are AOK.

Thanks wernermeister.

Mikeman's experience was mirror identical to my own today...I could have written the post myself!

I think the trick was what I read in another post...pull the stick and let it sit for 5-10 or so minutes before trying a read. I did that earlier after posting and got a good read. I have a very slightly tilted driveway. If I face the van one way the reading is too high, while if I turn it around 180 degrees it reads a bit below the upper mark.

So I think I'll find a nice level paved surface nearby and see what I get. Thanks for your help!

I just did an oil change this weekend and can verify that is the correct method. Here's a little more detail:
1. Pull the dipstick and wipe it clean.
2. Do not put the dipstick back.
3. Go find something better to do for at least 5 minutes.
4. Put the dipstick back in.
5. Remove said dipstick and take a reading.

This is best done with a hot engine so that the oil drains more quickly from the dipstick tube. I learned this from a co-worker who has a Tundra. Seems like Toyota has a habit of making dipsticks that are not easily read using the more conventional methods. It really shouldn't be this hard.
