I have a 2003, which may be a bit different.
I drained the pan.....measuring what came out......removed the pan, measuring the additional fluid that I got out......cleaned the inside of the pan and magnets.....replaced the filter with a new one......and put the pan back into place.
Then I filled the pan with new ATF.....through the dip stick tube.
Now.....starting with a pan full of clean fluid, I removed the tranny fluid cooler line that has the fluid flow BACK INTO the transmission........at the metal line on the transmission.....and directed it into a container.
On my 2003, it is the line that goes into the metal tube that is more to the driver's side.
Then I started the motor and let it idle.....and watched the fluid flow out of the cooler hose.....and when the flow slowed, or got bubbles in it.....I turned the motor OFF.......measured the amount of fluid that came out......and added the same amount of new fluid.
I did the cooler line drain and fill about 3 or 4 times, using about 11 quarts of tranny fluid TOTAL for the pan drop and cooler line exchange.
