The had unit treats phones and audio devices as separate devices and you can have two devices (must be 1 phone and 1 audio device, not 2 of either) synced at the same time. For example, both my wife and i have iPhones. She is the van's primary driver so we have the unit set to sync with her "phone". She doesnt care much about streaming music from her phone via BT. I however, do like to stream music from my phone when I'm driving the Sienna so the head unit is set to my iPhone as a BT audio device. Tis means that any time both of us are in the car the radio is synced to both phones simultaneously, indicated by the cellular signal strength indicator AND the music note on the radio screen. I stream tunes and when an incoming call is coming in on my wifes phone my phone automatically pauses playback and i have the option to answer her phone or decline which then resumes music streaming from my phone. Its a great setup.
If i want to set up my phone as a BT phone then i go into the BT phone menu and select my phone from the list of devices (ive paired my phone in the past but i dont talk while i drive so its just taking up a spot in the list of devices.) Conversely, if the kids want iPad audio through the sound system i just enter the BT setup menu, go to BT audio sub menu, then select iPad from the list of audio devices. Hope i answered your questions..
