Tpms

I just bought some 17" steel rims for winter tires for my 2011 Toyota Sienna but didn't install TPMS sensors and the tire pressure warning light is on.

I don't really care if the light is on, but can anyone tell me if I van get away without installing the TPMS sensors or if not installing the sensors will bugger anything up? (i.e. traction control, etc.)

You'll be fine. The dash light being on is all you will have to deal with. If you're stock wheels and tires are near your van when you park....say...in the garage at night, the system may reset each time. But it will trigger again after 20-30 minutes of driving. Some folks cover up the light with a piece tape if it bothers them.

Thanks...the light doesn't bother me since I am not staring at the dash when I'm driving. I just wanted to make sure that the TPMS systems isn't tied to anything else that coul cause other issues.

Billiam is right. TPMS is just looking for a signal from the sensors. When it doesn't get one, it triggers a light. It won't hurt it to leave them out.

Probably not a problem what so ever. On the other hand, some evil dealers or tire stores will say "Oh, it's going to damage the sensor on your car so yes, you will need a set of NEW TPMS on your winter tires as well... "

I'm dropping off mine tomorrow to have a set of Blizzaks installed on a set of Highlander Limited rims I picked up. The tire shop has aftermarket sensors they're going to install and I'm curious how they work. The open question seems to be if the Sienna will remember both sets in memory so I don't need to reprogram every time. Tire guys says he's seen it work on some Toyotas and not on others. This is the first '11 Sienna he's swapped out the rims and sensors. I'm hoping it does so I can swap the wheels on/off without needing a reprogram. I would run with the light on as well but the little lady doesn't like the idea and it's her daily-driver.

I'm not aware of any Toyotas that can store more than one set of codes. Any good tire shop should be able to re-program for little or nothing. In fact, the local tire shop that I use does it for free....as I have sensors in both my alloy and steelie rims.

FYI...the cost of OEM Pacific brand sensors has come way down in the last year or so. I picked up a brand new set of 4 back in the spring for $45 shipped. Some shops will charge $200-$400 for sensors. There's really no need to pay that much anymore. TPMS's have been out long enough to no longer be a novelty...and the price of the hardware associated with it is falling. So be smart!

They'll program them for free whenever I want...it's just not all that convenient to drag her van here (40 miles from home). It would be nice to swap the summer tires back on for a long weekend trip if the weather is nice. Even better if the TPMS didn't throw a light.

We didn't talk cost yet but they always give me a good deal. My company is their #1 customer so I usually do pretty well on the personal stuff. Last time he priced me a complete set of alloys/sensors/blizzaks it was $1,000 (tire rack is $1250). Then I found these factory alloys that I like better so not sure where I'll be for just tires/sensors.

Canada TPM question

I have a 2011 Sienna Ltd AWD. My previous vehicle was a 2008 Lexus RX350. I had a set of 17" OEM wheels with snows put on that I kept when I sold the Lexus.

I was hoping someone could help with the following:
1. Does the Lexus TPM sensors installed in the wheels work on the 2011 Sienna
2. Will the 17" factory OEM wheels fit on the 2011 Sienna AWD

Thanks so much for your help!

I can't say 100% on the sensors. But I will go so far as to say more than likely they will work. Most Toyota/Lexus OEM sensors are Pacific brand, part # PMV-107J.

As for the wheels? Yes, they'll fit. The Sienna and RX share the same 5x114.3 bolt pattern and have the same 60.1 mm hub-bore. There may be a small difference in offset...but not enough to matter.

http://www.tirerack.com can answer lots of questions about sizes.

I just received my winter tires for my '11 SE. I went through Tire Rack and am doing the -1 sizing. I now have a set of Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi2, 235/55R18, on Moda EB1 wheels. Not cheap overall, but the 18" sizes was lots cheaper than a set of 235/50R19 winter tires.

there is a TPMS sensor reset tool discussed on the forum here, for those who are bothered by the light. Like me.

Let us know how the Michelins work out. I was tempted but decided I better stick with what I knew worked for us. Some of the reviews for the wet heavy snow we get weren't all that impressive on the Michelins.

I've run Blizzaks on my vehicles for years, decided to change it up and the Michelin user reviews on Tire Rack were a little better than the comparable Blizzaks.
