If you can stick around at the shop while they are doing the tranny fluid , ask to see the tranny fluid filter and the fluid pan. If you look carefully, you'll see metal filings caught on the filer. In addition, the pan was several magnets strategically placed on the bottom to collect finer metal particals. You'll be surprised at what you see!
You're right. Synth. fluid doesn't lose viscosity and it's lubing properties as much as reg. fluid under high temps. This is a good thing. I even went as far as installing an external tranny cooler 'cause I'm sooo paranoid now;
