To be honest, i don't know if it's required in NC, but some of my friends and family prefer to wear them in the back seat.

As for me, I never did until in HS. I was sitting in the back seat (middle spot) when my friend had to slam on the brakes (with ABS) when no one was ready. The people to my right and left got facefuls headrest. I ended up kissing the AC controls. Now i always wear them.
