tread seperated from tire at 70mph. WTF!?!

on saturday i was driving on the turnpike when i started to hear a slight thumping noise. my exit was only a couple of miles away so i slowed from 80mph to 70 and at the exit i would stop and see what was in my tire. about a minute later there was a big BANG so i pulled over to discover that my tire came apart, and taking part of my bumper and fender with it. i just found this odd that most of the tread seperated from the tire. the tire was hissing a bit when i was changing it, but really didnt lose pressure too quickly.

the only section of tread remaining...

the carnage that was caused...

popped out the corner light and scraped up the paint quite nicely...

maybe a little difficult to see, but it even bent the bottom of the door and rocker panel.

of course this had to happen after the wife has been on my case about getting a new car. a couple of days earlier the rear seatbelt stopped retracting and about 2 hours before this when pulling off to a rest area, the car stalled out. still dont know why that happened.
