rims have a diameter, width, offset, and lug pattern.
you can use pretty much any diameter you want within reason, I wouldn't ago above 16 though. I have 15s on mine and I think they're perfect, but it's all about personal preference.
7" wide is probably the most I would recommend, I think jmaz has 8" wide wheels, but I think he's having clearance issues too...
offset, you want something in the mid 30s. high 30s will probably work, I wouldn't touch anything in the 40s unless you want to get spacers.
the corollas lug pattern is 4x100
with tires, the size looks like this: 205/50R15
the first number is width, 205s is pretty much the most you can fit without having to roll the fenders.
second is sidewall height, but it's a ratio of the width... so it can be pretty tricky. for example: a 225/45/17 has the same sidewall height as a 255/40/17

the last number is what diameter wheel you have.
