Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) problems

So I'm having some issues with the VSS on my 20V swap.

originally the VSS is in the trans where the speedo cable goes... I like having a speedo, so I can't do it that way. So I researched it and there is a VSS in the stock gauge cluster. sweet right? not quite...

my SR5 doesn't have a connection to the ECU like a GT-S would, but does have a connection that goes to the cruise control computer plug. so I cut the wire (purple/white) out of the plug and ran it to my ECU (to L11, where SPD should be) and it still doesn't work... I still get the VSS check engine light.

does anyone know why it isn't working?
