Some of the previous posts are a great help with regard to removing the end caps. I just wanted to add a few things.
The "aggressive" clips are on the outside of the end caps. The less aggressive clips are on the inside. So, while removing the end caps pull out the inside first. Once the inside is released, there is less pressure on the outside clips making them easier to unseat without damage. I just used a screwdriver.
For reinstalling, again start with the inside and then seat the outside. Some firm strikes with the heal of my hand did the trick.
Do the cross bars only come in black? I was suprised to see black when I opened the box. The rest of the roof rack is gray/silver.
