u don't have to be moving with a manual transmission but the autos should be in motion. Basically there are actual gears in the transfer case and the transmission doesn't have gears but rather bands, since there isn't a clutch to disengage the engine from the drivetrain things are spinning in the transmission, that greeeer clang was a grear being suddenly stopped, so by moving, the gears slip into position better. Over time as thing wear in it won’t grind at all.

alls the 4x4 switch does is engage front hubs so it will grind weather the switch is on or off. basically your always in 4wd either hi or low, one of the reasons for the shitty gas milage, then torque is converted to the front wheels when the hubs are locked in
