Is thera a new seat for sale in the US anywhere that does not meet this?
Meaning the $50 seat made by Century sold at K-Mart is going to "protect" the child as much as these $100 + seats?
I mean sure the fabric will be of higher quality, but the cheap fabric in the $50 seat is good enough for my kid to puke on.

Here's some info I found online from people who have gotten a Recaro seat:
"I have a Britax and a Recaro start, and while te Britax is a step up from a Graco (EPS vs foam) coverings, there is no comparison to the quality of the Recaro vs. the Britax. The Recaro's full aluminum fram is Rigid, the Britax I can torque 30 degrees by hand . Also, most boosters start at 40 lbs, where the Recaro start at 18 to 30 lbs, depending on the model. This may save the purchase of an interim car seat. If you want the best in safety for your kid, and there is a difference, get the Recaro. If you need more proof, go to Recaro's website, and look at the exensive crash testing the do - that costs money too."
"Ditto the above. Recaro certainly has a solid reputation and their seats well exceed minimum impact protection standards. I'm a pediatrician and had the sad misfortune this past weekend of receiving a call from a local trauma unit informing me of the death of one of our young patients. He was killed as the result of a side/rear impact producing a massive head injury. He was riding in a Mercedes SUV and was properly restrained in a car seat. The driver of the other car(Toyota Camry) was drunk.
My wife and I both drive SUV's(Seqouia and Touareg), but as a result of this past weekend, I just ordered Recaro's to replace the Cosco's in both cars, for my three girls. Not that the Coscos aren't good seats, but any chance of increasing survivability, however slight, seems well worth it."
The second one was from a physician. The way I see it is most people here wouldn't think twice about dropping 2-3 times that amount for rims, DVD headunit or other cosmetic mod. Why not get something that will increase the overall safety of your children which are priceless vs your car. You can always replace your car. The same can't be said for your kids!
