235/45/18 or 245/40/18

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone can guide me in the right direction with this question. My SE V6 comes with 225/45/18 stock. I'd like to get some larger tires and have a few options in front of me. I know that 235/45/18 will make the tire a wider tire and 245/40/18 will do about the same. Will I face any issues with this? I'm going to mount them on the stock rims from Toyota.

Thanks in advance.

235/45/18 or 245/40/18

I would think going to a 245/40 would be to big. Remember that the first set of numbers is the width, with the second set (40) being the % of the width that equals the height.

a 35 series would be close to the same height. the car needs a bigger foot print anyways.

Thanks in advance.
Most tires have a recommended rim width range. The rims on the SE V6 are 7.5" wide. Realistically, the 235/45/18 is the widest tire recommended for a 7.5" rim. The minimum recommended rim width for a 245/40/18 tire is 8". You might be able to mount a 245/40/18 on a 7.5" rim, but you would be reducing the section width of the tire in doing so. So if the sectional width of that tire is 9.6" on an 8" rim, it's only going to be 9.4" on a 7.5" rim. The 235/45/18 is probably the better choice.

I doubt that there would be any real clearance issues with the 235/45/18.

Re: 235/45/18 or 245/40/18

I know for a fact that highlander rims require 235 tires and those are 19x7.5 so if I were you the biggest you should run is 235/45.

It will fit. May be unnecessary, but its all your preference. I'm running my staggered wheels on my FWD car simply for appearance. And those are 255-40-18 in the rear. I'm running stock tire in front.
