Thoughts on "Display Audio System"?

For a vacation, we recently rented a 2012 Camry LE with power driver's seat & Display Audio System (touchscreen) rather than take our old car. After driving the car for a week, I have mixed feelings about the touchscreen audio system. The audio reception & sound were very nice, but this type of system seems like it would be a distraction for the driver. With the old style system, I could operate the radio by feel without taking my eyes off the road. With the new system, there were buttons on the steering wheel to operate the radio. But there was still the tendency to look at the screen.

Maybe the problem is me, that I am just not used to the new system and I need to give it more time?

So - what do you folks think about the new system? What do you like? What do you dislike?

To be honest, I do look at the screen a little more than I should..I have an SE and have the same ;system you just described...will try and refrain from doing so, however, it is habit forming and can't get the eyes off..always lookin' at the damn screen even when I don't need to look..:headbang::headbang:...LOL...

I love my screen. We were looking to get TCH LE for my wife. TCH LE comes with no screen and ti me interior looks completely different and plain.
I love my screen: easy to operate and it looks pretty sophisticated.
:)
one more thing: I replaced front stock speakers with 3-way pioneers and added some B-Quiet to the front doors. music sound much better now, deeper, crispier, more natural.
looks like stock HU got some potential with better speakers.

I love the DAS as well. I don't own an iPod so the ability to load my mp3s onto a USB flash drive and have the display all song info and album art is great. BTW - JIC you don't know this you can press the album art on the display and it will list all the songs on that album.

I usually just use the steering wheel controls as well as voice commands and most of the time have the nav screen up so I don't look at the display too often.

molson.david - What model 3-way pioneers did you install and what was involved to do it? Thanks...

sorry don't remember. i moved them from my previous camry.
I can try to look it up, but I really doubt model gonna make big difference.
get any 6x9 3 way good brand speakers and plastic adapters for them.
OEM speakers got weird mounting points, so you need adapters. I got mine off ebay, $20.
you need to remove door cart/panel/cover and T-tab factory +/- wire for the speakers.
use contraction caulk to seat adapter-makes it less vibration effected.
put some sound deadened on outside door shell right across speakers. add more material if you want less road noise coming into the cabin.
actually factory speakers are not that bad but they sure can not compete with good metal frame/ poly membrane 3-4 way speakers.

david - thanks for the pics and model info. Don't believe Pioneer still carries those particular speakers but I am sure we can find something similar.

BTW - do you happen to have any pics of what the OEM speakers from your 2012 Camry looked like?

display audio w/nav & Entune specs

Not sure if this info is posted elsewhere but I contacted the tech at Toyota I have been corresponding with and he was kind enough to let me know the specs on my head unit which is the display audio w/nav & Entune (aka premium DA system). It is a Pioneer unit with a total peak output of about 160 watts. The speakers are all 4 ohm and have a rated input power of 20 watts. The 2 dash tweeters are 6.5 cm (2.6 in), the 2 front door speakers are 18 cm (7.0 in) full range, and the rear deck are the same size and spec as the front door speakers. The display itself is a 6.1 in wide lcd ega type.

He would only send me the specs on my particular system but the screen capture of the specs showed part of the specs on the basic DA system which is a Panasonic unit.

sorry, I didn't make any pics.
if you ever removed door panel you'll be fine.
1.you need to remove (use you fingers and just pull it up) door switches bezel and disconnect harness.
2.remove black plastic piece that covers rear view mirror mounting screws from inside.
3.get little flat screw diver and pry away from the door plastic bezel around door opener handle.
it should pop away pretty easy.
4 remove screw under than cover.
5.use fingers to pull up top portion of the arm rest on the door.
6.remove two big screws under armrest.
7.grab bottom part of the door panel and pull it it away from the door.
make short but quick movement. there are 10-12 standard plastic clips on other side of it.
8. pull the panel bit up to release (not sure how to call it) rain guard/dust belt? -rubber molding which goes along bottom edge of the window.
it got few metal clips which seating on the top edge of the inner door shell.
9. disconnect door opener cables (pull rubber grommet out off handle base and than remove end of the cable with little ball on the end from handle) and door light cable.
:chug:

I used B-Quiet ultimate. it's thinner, lighter cheaper and more effective than Dynamat extreme.
