This thread is in reference to another thread on here.

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/1...rum/11-audio-video-security-tech/418815-found-2012-camry-audio-video-input.html

I know Tech has its own section, but I thought it could be useful on here to get the answer i'm looking for.

My question is only related to the video input not the backup camera.

I am not sure if anyone has discovered this:

I have a 2012 Camry Hybrid LE, during the process of adding HD radio to AUX and backup camera, I have discovered Audio/Video Input.

The 2012 Camry Hybrid LE came with the lowest cheapest possible radio unit:

I got a unbelievable great deal on ebay on a 6" Display Audio for regular Camry LE (Made by Panasonic):

Here are the steps I did:

On Connector I155/I150 (28 Pins)

Image

Connect Pin #25 (Green) to body ground (-)
This is AUX mini jack plug detection wire.

Video (+) input to #13
Video (-) to body ground (-)

Pin #28, Audio-in (Left) from mini plug-in jack
Pin #27, Audio ground from mini plug-in jack
Pin #26, Audio-in (right) from mini plug-in jack

On Connector I154 (16 Pins)

Image

Connect Pin #6 (Red) to body ground (-)

This is Parking Brake Signal. It is the 3rd one from the left.
If your head unit already has this connector, it will be the Red wire.
Toyota doesn't use common wire color code.
This wire has nothing to do with Backup camera.

It locks out the screen and possible GPS control while car is moving.
Please note it is a violation to display moving video in the front while car is moving.
By pass it at your own risk and responsibility.

My car didn't have any connector on it. I am too cheap to spend $ on getting factory connector and pins. I use CD-Rom audio connector (black) to make the connector.

I used a TV tuner for testing:

The OP didn't mention how to add the video input exactly. Cutting and splicing an RCA cable won't exactly plug right into pin #13.

Does anyone have any knowledge about this? I just need some help on how to add the video input and how to activate the video signal.

I know on a rear backup camera it is activated when the car is put in Reverse, but how will I be able to activate the video signal while the car is parked?

Another member on here (laurido92) did ask the OP some questions. Maybe he can help out a little bit or anybody else.

Thanks

from what I gathered once you connect the rca video cable to the harness you should have the option to turn on the a/v option on the screen menu. You will have to buy the pin/cable that goes in the harness. If look in this thread it will give you the part #for the female connector you need to make the connection to the radio. The ground wire you should be able to just connect to any ground source.

nine times out of ten, you can find a plug somewhere in the dash that is not being used with the same type of pins.

usually its for an option that your not using such that a XLE will have. I have in the past opened up the plug, extracted one of the pins with about 2 inches of wire and plugged the pin into the slot of the connector I wanted to use, and butt connected the wire to whatever I want the input/output to be such as RCA.

on my 370z, when you have a signal coming into the A/V input, the option to go to A/V appears on the screen. not sure about the camry but most likely will be the same.

So, I took out the radio and tried the video input and it didn't work. I probably didn't connect it how it should have been. Didn't do any cutting or splicing. Got fed up with it so i put everything back in.

Now the problem is when i turned on the radio, it doesn't have the Entune Apps installed anymore! WTF! When I push the APPS button the screen shows "system not installed"

Everything looks different as far as the menus go, but all my radio/sat presets were there exactly how i had it set. The audio settings were still the same.

Seems like by disconnecting the radio completely the APPS were deleted

I found the link and downloaded the file, got an empty usb drive and put the iso file in it but still had no luck. The problem is that when I press the APPS button it just pops up a message saying "system not installed". I went through everything again and made sure all the connections and wires are plugged in. It doesn't even detect a USB drive plugged in. Even when i put in a USB drive with song files in it, they won't play. The option for USB under source is always gray even when the USB is plugged in.

I guess i'll have to take it to the dealership :-(

Just make sure you don't tell them you were messing around with the stereo because they can say that you caused the problem and not warrant it.

Good luck!!!

tried everything to make it work. I eventually had to take it to the dealership. Toyota will have to order a complete new entune system for my car.

edit: the bs they gave me was unbelievable. the shop foreman said the entune stopped working because my xmradio subscription expired and that's what gives entune the signal to work. I had to call Toyota customer service to get a case # because the dealership didn't want to do anything for me.

That sucks!! It's amazing the stuff the very knowledgeable and reliable people at the dealer will tell you. It's sad that you had to go to the extreme you did just to get something that's under warranty fixed.

No. What makes me mad is that the dealership refused to even look at it. I'm not an idiot to believe that the XM Radio is what gives signal to the Entune system. Plus, I didn't splice any wires or do anything to the unit. I simply unplugged the wires and looked at them and what brand the headunit was. If that's all it takes for the unit to go bad then yes I want it fixed for free.

I don't have premium. I have the basic unit with navigation non-jbl. Any app that needed data would connect through bluetooth and use my phones data. Nothing worked off of XM. I would understand if the XM expired and the apps stopped updating or something. But it's as if the apps don't even exist anymore. No maps either. That whole menu for apps is gone.

Great post! Now I would actually consider changing the headunit out for something I like. The reason I'd even keep the stock headunit for some time is because entune is activated for three years, but after three years the head unit is really nothing special. Sure, I'll lose the fuel consumption chart and the tire pressure reader, but it's not like I never had a car without those features. Also, the stock headunit has settings that are directly related to the car itself such as unlock settings, drl on/off, headlight sensitivity, etc. Changing the headunit means losing the ability to change those settings. I'm guessing the way I leave the settings is the way it'll stay forever or will it revert back to the default settings? Another concern is about the low tire pressure light that comes on the cluster. If I change the stock headunit out for an after-market one, will the cluster still throw the orange light for low tire pressure? I know I won't be able to check the psi reading on the radio, but as long as the light comes on that'll work just fine for me.

if i was still using my stock head unit i would have loved to attempt this mod . but for all involved you you really think its worth all the trouble? what i'm really asking is wouldn't it be easier to just purchase an aftermarket radio or the advent otocam3?. Reason i'm a posing this question is because stock head unit no features from what i've seen is anywhere from 100-300 to add rear camera 800-1200 to add navigation , with these prices i recommend just going after market. This is why i went Otocam3

Well, i already had backup cam, and i had the entune screen, for me personally, all i want is those two things. From there i am going to/Currently do use my smartphone / raspberrypi in the car and get the features i want to have out of the headunit. If i had mirrorlink i'd be a totally happy puppy.

But i am admittedly geekier than most people, like my solutions to be very custom :p
Like you can see in the picture i put up there is a raspberrypi, running raspbmc, and i am going to use it as an airplay reciever in my car so i can beam w/e i want to my car's screen via the wifi/bluetooth I set up in the car.

Next up, inductive charging mat inside of the bottom console box ^.^

So little update, installed the front cam & Video select, only have 3 sources right now, going to tap into the rear cam to fill the 4th spot:
Input 1: Front Cam (need to re-adjust this one)

Input 2: XBMC running on my raspberry pi:

Input 3: Video from my phone, b/c why not

Regarding your attempt to connect a video cable. There is more than one way to skin a cat. For instance, in the Backup Camera post there was a lot of talk of using Toyota connectors to plug into the SE's plug under the dash in the center console. I used a CDROM audio connector and it slides right over the four pins that have the power and vidoe signal. Just spliced in the video and power wires. So for getting into other connectors you have ot use a little immagination. For instance, if its a pin that you need to connect a single wire to you might get a hold of some surplus military round female bayonette connectors and take a pin out of there. Of course it has to be the right diameter but there are manysizes. Just look around. Or you can use a single wire connector from an old PC motherboard. May have to shave it down a little but it will fit. I like getting inventive instead of depending on someone else.
Don't forget that when you go poking around in your radio head that those multipin connectors have to be treated with some respect. They SHOULD be fairly robust but all are not created equal. There are thousands of types of calbe harness connectors in the world. The military ones are the best ... gold plated and all; but automotive connectors leave a lot to be desired. I don't like disturbing them since in some cases you are rolling the dice. Not to say that these things are fragile, but for the most part they were never desighned to endure repeated matings, just get the car assembeld as fast as possible at a low cost with the expectation that nothing is going to be disturbed for a long time. Reliability trumps Maintainability.
