2012 Camry GPS Updates

When driving my new Camry home from the dealership, I noticed the GPS did not have some of the new road construction in my area. The salesman told me that they may be able to update it when I come in for service. Does anyone know how good their updates actually are? TomTom and Garmin advertise lifetime updates but they don't do a very good job. Any information will be appreciated.

And no guarantee the update will be up to date.

Garmin charges about $100 for lifetime updates, or includes it with the purchase of the GPS. I suspect you will find a new meaning of "don't do a very good job", with the Toyota Navigation system. For the price of one update from Toyota you can buy a Garmin and take it from vehicle to vehicle including rentals. Much more convenient.

I was told it wasn't in the vehicle any more, it is now downloaded interactively from the I'net. But in fact I usually just use my iPad.

I'm never going to bother updating my in-car nav...neither will I use it. Its so bland and lacks details and up to date information. I prefer my Garmin, I'd recommend investing in that instead of updating the IN CAR nav

In dash GPS is not user friendly, and will lead you in circles. It made me flaming mad one day in Minneapolis on simple directions, and that is when I wrote it off. My Garmin rocks, plus it is 4 years old!

No complaints here - has worked fine for me and I like being able to say the whole address in one shot and have it navigate for me without having to press a button except the voice command button.

I know people who have similar GPS issues with Garmins, etc, giving poor directions. GPS is an aid, not a perfect system that's why there are still maps.

Never understood why people pay good money for an option before checking it out thoroughly during a test drive.

Sometimes you have to buy unwanted options to get the one that you really want.

Yes, that is an issue with the Camry. We wanted leather seats and a sun roof. Looked at it, but you end up paying through the nose as they are bundled with a bunch of other stuff we didn't want. And the "leather seats" are not really leather, so that is why we stuck to the basic XLE model. I even looked at the LE model and considered buying after market aluminum wheels and using the steel ones for winter tires. Finally decided on the XLE.

Camry should consider how they bundle their options, and offer real leather seats.

I wanted the safety feature of blind spot monitoring and rear view camera. Had to get moon roof, leather seats, navigation, etc.

Agreed, they bundle unrelated options. You shouldn't need the leather package to get the premium sound system. The JBL GreenEdge should have been bundled with Entune or navigation if anything.

Despite Toyota's born again attitude toward safety, obviously safety is a feature you pay through the nose for. Toyota should have a 'safety package' they could sell. I would love to see consumer reports talk about that one. But alas, you have to purchase the $3200.00 luxury package to get the safety features that should be built into every one of their cars. 2014 the camera is mandatory in the US I believe.
