I changed the carpet in the 1994 Camry today, and in the process saw that this procedure could be even simplier. I removed the what I would call the rear center console, and saw that the screw to loosen to allow an adjustment is accessible from there.

To remove the rear center console, from the back: remove the two 12 mm bolts that are at the bottom of the square box. From the back, lift the trim around the shifter. Undo the two screws, Pull it out.
