Manual or Auto Transmission?

Do you guys by chance all have Manual trannys?

I tried both, and when I saw that the Manual in 5th was turning over 4000 RPM @ 80, and the Auto with O/D ON was turning only 3200 @ 80, that said it all mileage-wise. I bought an xB Auto, and I'm getting well over 30 mpg on the highway with about 500 miles so far. Around town, more like 27.

Perhaps a 5th gear switch-out for lower RPMs?

D.

Maybe the car needs to be broken in a little more to get maximum gas mileage.

EPA estimates are always a bit lofty. That is because they are based on concepts and testing from several decades ago, and do not take into account modern vehicles. There was a great article explaining why EPA estimates are off and how the whole system needs to be updated in a recent (within 3 months) issue of either Motor Trend or CarandDriver.

You have a heavy right foot...shift early and don't speed. But that goes with any car...I think a few dudes from www.scionlife.com suggested that as well...

some things that make gas mileage not so great:
heavy acceleration
hard breaking
going over 60 miles an hour (sucks yes)

my xa gets about 33 miles in city driving and around 40 on the highway. (i check it every time i fill up on gas... i'm a dork and i cary a calculater in my car just for that purpose) it has almost 6000 miles on it... i'm pretty satisfied.

I'm getting really good mileage right now, about 29 (I've got about 1600 miles total) but I rarely go on the highway, maxing my speed @ about 50 mph on my way to and from work. I have the manual, the auto is such a dog I couldn't justify going with that tranny. I'm getting an intake system put on and switching to synthetic oil on my first change and I'm hoping that helps out a lot too.
