So I was on toyota's web site looking at the corolla, and I used the compare feature and compared it to an 07 corolla. I found it interesting that this new rolla is rated at 27 city and 35 highway mpg. And the older 07 is rated at 32 city and 41 highway. Just strange to me that the new engine has gone down in MPG. Even if they tweaked the 1.8L to get more power, seems to me they should have left it alone to get better gas milage, and those wanted a zippier car could choose the 2.4L. My reasoning is that most people by this car as a gas saver, not a track star!

Why would compare a 2007 to the 2009 instead of 2008 to the 2009 that both use the same testing methods?
Regardless, only the 1.8 with automatic has improved mileage compared to the old Corolla. Every other version of the 2009 has disappointing mileage.

So they have changed the testing methods between 07 and 08? Sorry didnt know that, not that up on those details!
The new EPA estimate are supposed to be more accurate, which they are. Under the old methods they were wildly optimistic while IMO the new estimates are really pretty close.
To give an example, my 2006 Charger was rated at 17 city and 25 hwy. Real world I got 16. My 2009 Corolla is rated 27 city and 35 hwy. Real world I get 32.
I just had my first fill up on my 09 corolla(1.8L).I put in 9.2 gallons,my mileage was 254mi.
So at this time my average was 27.6 mi\gal.....90% city and 10% freeway.
I hope that i will get more mi\gal after the break in period..
im averaging between 27.6 and 27.7 mpg....i do a mix of city + highway driving...but highway = NYC highways which means i get stuck in plenty of traffic jams

I think this is going to be the average for mix driving....this corolla will be my wife's commute car,she drives 33 mi. one way and 30 miles of that will be all freeway driving. My wife doesn't want to drive it to work yet, because of the break in period....the men of the house has do it......from gas to washing.LOL
I'll be happy if the averaging on freeway at least 32-34 mi\gal....we'll find out soon.
Like some people mentioned there's been a change in EPA standards. It's not just the Corolla, all cars for all brands this year have been recalculated.
