RPM before gear change?

I'm just curious... on average, what's your RPM before you change gears?

I usually do it by ear or seat of the pants. I was paying some attention to the tach during the test drive I did and it was easy to run it over 4k as the engine revved very freely. I was only being a little punchy with the throttle. I expect most of my shifts will fall in the 3.5k-4k range as I'm an economy driver.

Anyone else notice 1st gear in the XRS is really short? It barely gets you moving, even when you put it past 3000rpm.

2nd is too wide to start in, but it really hauls once you get going. Gosh!

Yes. 1st gear is totally short... it's almost like a very weak diesel engine!!!

That's how Scion tCs are. How's the 5th gear? What rpm do you guys run when going 80mph?

I'm doing about 3,700 rpm going 80mph. Totally absurd since my old 2001 Corolla is only going 3,000rpm doing 80mph. That's why tCs hwy mpg suck. The car desperately needs a 6th gear.

Anyways, when I want to save gas, I shift at 3,000rpm. I take it up to 4,000 - 4,500 when entering a freeway. I take it up to 6,000 when racing, never hit the limiter.

Haven't taken my XRS up to 80mph yet, but from what you're saying it sounds about right.

Cruising in 70mph is about 3000rpm. My old '02 S cruised at 70mph just over 2200rpm. Not sure why but it seems like Toyota is doing this on purpose, maybe for acceleration and climbing hills? Personally Im not a fan of it. Im a personal believer that my final gear should be solely for cruising, not accelerating. Much rather a 5th gear that will allow me to cruise on low RPMs and just gear down to 4th to pass or climb.

As requested...

My RPM when I'm doing 75mph is around 3,400rpm at 5th gear.

At least, that's what I remember. And it can easily go up to 85mph, too... if you're not careful.

Finally took my car on the highway today!! Here's what I noticed on my auto XRS:
- RPM @ 100km/h=2100
- RPM @ 140km/h=2700

The car was VERY SMOOTH on the highway, just couldn't believe it...It felt so good and powerful...

Holy RPMs, Batman! 140mph?? Have you gone bonkers?

Driving the Corolla on the highway is sometimes scary... you could really feel the wind blowing from the sides... making the car move off a straight line. They should also design the sides for aerodynamics... but that would probably create cars that look like pyramids. Haha!
